How Do You Convert Fractions to Decimals?
Divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number). The formula is: Decimal = Numerator / Denominator. For example, 7/8 = 7 / 8 = 0.875. For mixed numbers, first convert to an improper fraction or add the whole number to the fractional decimal.
Dana Kowalski works with fractional inches daily. A measurement of 5 and 3/8 inches needs to be entered into her design software as a decimal. She converts: 3/8 = 3 / 8 = 0.375, so the measurement is 5.375 inches. Getting this wrong by even 1/16 of an inch (0.0625) can mean a cabinet door that does not close properly.

When You Need This Conversion
Construction and Woodworking
Tape measures use fractions (1/16, 1/8, 1/4 inch), but CNC machines and design software require decimals. Dana memorizes the eighths (0.125, 0.25, 0.375, 0.5, 0.625, 0.75, 0.875) because they come up in nearly every project. For sixteenths, she halves the eighth values.
Cooking and Baking
Scaling recipes requires converting fractions to decimals. If Leah needs to make 1.5 times a recipe calling for 2/3 cup of sugar, she converts: 2/3 = 0.667, then 0.667 x 1.5 = 1.0 cup. Working in decimals makes multiplication cleaner than trying to multiply fractions directly (2/3 x 3/2 = 1, but that is harder to reason about quickly).
Finance and Shopping
Stock prices were historically quoted in fractions (like 25 and 3/8). Since 2001, US stocks use decimal pricing, but understanding the conversion helps with older financial data. Bond prices are still sometimes quoted in 32nds: a bond at 99-16 means 99 and 16/32 = 99.5% of face value.
